Don't Tell People Your Dreams. Show Them.

Writer: Jill HamptonJill Hampton

In our world, it's easy to get caught up in the talk—telling others about our dreams, our plans, and our faith. But there's a powerful truth in the saying, "Don't tell people your dreams. Show them." This idea is beautifully reflected in James 2:18 (NIV): "But someone will say, 'You have faith; I have deeds.' Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds."

As Christians, our faith is meant to be more than words. It's meant to be lived out, demonstrated through our actions. Here are five practical ways we can show our faith in everyday life:

1. Show Kindness to Others

Kindness is a tangible expression of God’s love. It can be as simple as smiling at a stranger, holding the door open, or offering a kind word. These small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone's day and are a practical way to reflect God's love.

Matthew 5:16 (NIV): "In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

2. Practice Patience

Patience is a virtue that reflects our trust in God’s timing. Whether waiting in a long line, dealing with a challenging coworker, or navigating difficult circumstances, practicing patience shows our reliance on God and His perfect plan.

Proverbs 14:29 (NIV): "Whoever is patient has great understanding, but one who is quick-tempered displays folly."

3. Serve Others

Jesus demonstrated the ultimate act of service by washing His disciples' feet. Serving others, whether through volunteering, helping a neighbor, or supporting a friend in need, mirrors Christ’s humility and love.

Galatians 5:13 (NIV): "You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love."

4. Forgive Freely

Forgiveness can be one of the hardest ways to live out our faith, but it is one of the most powerful. By forgiving those who have wronged us, we reflect God’s forgiveness toward us. This act of grace can bring healing and restoration.

Ephesians 4:32 (NIV): "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."

5. Share Your Faith

Living out our faith also means being bold in sharing it with others. This doesn’t mean preaching on street corners but rather sharing your testimony, inviting someone to church, or offering to pray for someone. It’s about letting others see the hope and joy you have in Christ.

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV): "But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect."

Conclusion

Living out our faith is a powerful testament to the reality of God's work in our lives. It's about letting our actions speak louder than our words, showing the world the love, grace, and truth of Jesus Christ through how we live each day. As we strive to show our faith through our deeds, we not only grow closer to God but also become a beacon of His light to those around us.
